An eager crowd interested in building or converting to solar or geothermal, using energy-efficient and green building materials, having questions about electric vehicles, concerned about dependence on fossil fuels or climate change, and looking for a child-friendly event descended on the 2009 Expo. The fourth annual Piedmont Alternative Energy & Electric Vehicle Expo took place on Saturday, June 20, 2009, in Warrenton, Virginia.
Expo offered professionals, families, and anyone interested in alternative energy a chance to learn from experts about living green and making homes and businesses more energy efficient. Seventeen new exhibitors joined returnees—a total of almost 50 exhibitors in all.
Exhibitors showcased serious, working models of green, energy-saving systems for homes and commercial buildings. They offered alternative-energy expertise, services, and products ranging from energy-efficient vehicles and other machines to green building materials and design, to how to live green and off the grid. Alternative energy sources represented included geothermal, biofuels, solar, and wind.
Children peddled the Energy Cycle to see how much energy it takes to create electric current for different uses, checked out solar model cars, and learned about the role of railroads in conserving energy from the Piedmont Railroaders' exhibit of working, model trains. Other highlights included local green projects and the Fauquier recycling center, which recycles just about any material. Nonprofit organizations offering help and information on living green also attended.
The Expo was held at Brumfield Elementary School, 550 Alwington Blvd, Warrenton, VA 20186. The school, offering ample free parking, is directly off Bus Rt 29/Rt 17 behind Wal*Mart and Home Depot (map below). A nominal admission of $5 per adult was charged, with children and students admitted free. For detailed information about Expo exhibitors and sponsors, download the 2009 Expo Program.
Food was available on site during Expo hours. Visitors took a break during the Expo to enjoy locally produced, sustainably grown foods offered by the Rappahannock Lions Club, Cold Stone Creamery, and Virginia Chutney Company.
The 2009 Expo was coordinated by RLEP's Money and Energy $avings Alternatives group. For more information on ME$A, click here or contact Rick or Kaye Kohler at realtorrick@crosslink.net or 540-675-1373.
